The gate was designed by Jones, who was captured in the royalist garrison at Basing House in 1645. The gate was possibly the family entrance to the churchyard from the manor house at Chesterton owned by the Peyto's. Sir Edward Peyto was Lieutenant General of the Ordnance in the Earl of Essex's parliamentarian army from November1642 to his death at Gloucester on 21 September 1643 from typhus. His funerary monument, along with his wife's, is in St. Giles' Church, to which this gate connects. See BCW Memorials: https://www.battlefieldstrust.com/memorial/memorial.asp?MemorialID=136
