Palaeologus was listed as a lieutenant in Sir Jacob Astley's regiment during the second Bishops War (1640) (see Edward Peacock, 'The Army Lists of the Roundheads and Cavaliers (London: Chatto and Windus, 1874), p.76). He went to join Lord St John's regiment in the Earl of Essex's army in September 1642 (See British Library Thomason Tracts E.117[3] 'The List of the Army... under the... Earl of Essex). With Lord St John's death at the battle of Edgehill the regiment passed to Colonel Thomas Essex. Palaeologus served under Thomas Essex as sergeant major of the regiment from 23 October 1642 to 27 May 1643. On the latter date he was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the regiment. (see The National Archives, SP28/8 f.144). Essex's regiment was part of the garrison of Bristol when it fell to the royalists in July 1643.
